In the world of fashion, where trends come and go, there exists a timeless and captivating allure—the symbolic power of horses. Their beauty and powerful presence have inspired designers and artists throughout the ages. The equine connection with nobility and royalty further elevated their symbolic significance. From medieval knights adorned in armor to the modern equestrian chic, these captivating creatures have been central to fashion’s aesthetic journey. Today, the equestrian influence in high end as well as mainstream fashion has left an indelible mark on runways, collections, and even everyday attire.

Horses in High End Fashion

The equestrian lifestyle has deeply influenced fashion, with its roots tracing back to the English countryside and the sport of horse riding. What began as practical attire for riders and horsemen soon transitioned into high fashion as designers recognized the elegance and sophistication of equestrian-inspired clothing. The fusion of tailored jackets, jodhpurs, riding boots, and delicate silk scarves became emblematic of classic equestrian style.

Over time, renowned fashion houses embraced the equestrian influence, incorporating it into their collections. Designers like Ralph Lauren, Gucci, and Hermès have all celebrated the equestrian aesthetic, turning riding attire into a luxurious and aspirational symbol of sophistication.

Stella McCartney’s Equestrian Runway Show Featuring Kendall Jenner

Stella McCartney’s 2023 Fall/Winter collection titled “Horse Power,” made a striking statement by featuring Camargue horses during her runway show at the historic ‘Manège de l’École Militaire’, the oldest riding school in France. The Camargue horses, native to southern France, are known for their gorgeous white coats and untamed spirit. Their presence on the runway added a unique and captivating dimension, paying homage to the timeless bond between horses and the fashion world. Leading the campaign was supermodel and equestrian Kendall Jenner, who shares a profound connection with horses. During an interview with InStyle magazine, the designer stated:  “I knew this season’s Stella girl had to love horses as much as I do. Kendall has been riding since she was a kid, just like me, and has her own ranch; you can see how at ease she is around these sensitive creatures and them with her.”

The brand is committed to animal welfare, promoting cruelty-free clothing without the use of leather, fur, or feathers. This winter’s designs incorporate horse prints, appaloosa print boots, oversized blazers, vegan bags, and alternative materials, aligning with a sustainable message.

Beyond the runway

Equestrian influence in everyday fashion is evident. Elements such as distinctive buckles reminiscent of riding tack and equipment, the timeless design of riding boots blending fashion and function, and the iconic horsebit hardware have transitioned from specialized riding gear to coveted fashion accessories.

The enduring allure of horses in the realm of fashion stands as a testament to their symbolic representation of grace and nobility. From the medieval era to contemporary haute couture, the equestrian influence has seamlessly integrated into the fabric of fashion, imprinting style and glamour on runways and everyday style.
